With cloud portability, organizations can remain flexible, control costs, and better respond to evolving business needs. This article explains what cloud portability entails and what it takes to achieve it.

Cloud portability refers to the ability of organizations to move applications, data, and services between different cloud environments without significant modifications or loss of functionality. The specific type of cloud environment is less important in this context. Depending on the use case, organizations can opt for a public cloud from well-known providers, a private cloud, or even an edge solution, whichever offers the most value.

Multi-cloud and multiple cloud strategies

Cloud portability is closely linked to the concepts of multi-cloud and multiple cloud strategies. A multi-cloud strategy refers to using two or more cloud environments to run different parts of an application. This ensures that you always have an alternative in case of issues or cost increases with a provider. A multiple cloud strategy means an organization uses several cloud environments that work together through a common abstraction layer. This enables organizations to provide a more consistent experience, regardless of which cloud environment is being used. Both strategies require a high degree of cloud portability to function, without running into technical or contractual barriers.

Freedom of choice

Digital sovereignty is another important reason to include cloud portability in your cloud strategy, especially for government organizations. By reducing dependence on large international hyperscalers and working with standardized solutions, we can retain sovereign control over our applications, processes, and data. European collaboration plays a crucial role here. By jointly setting requirements and developing standards, European countries can strengthen their position against large cloud providers. This not only offers greater freedom of choice but also enhances the security and accessibility of cloud services.

Open standards

Ultimately, cloud portability is about flexibility and agility, and that starts with the use of open standards. As outlined in the report from Forum Standaardisatie, standards are essential for achieving cloud portability. Standards such as Terraform and Haven (VNG: Association of Dutch Municipalities) have the potential to promote cloud portability, but they have not yet been included in the list of formal standards at Forum Standaardisatie. These so-called "white spots" indicate that there is still work to be done, but they also present opportunities for further development and collaboration.

A secure and flexible cloud strategy

Ensuring cloud portability is crucial for organizations that want to remain flexible and mitigate risks. One of the primary reasons to pursue this flexibility is to have a strong exit strategy, as emphasized in the national cloud policy. By ensuring a solid exit strategy, an organization can quickly and efficiently transition to another cloud provider when necessary, without being locked into a single vendor.

Cloud portability is not just a technical issue but a strategic decision that defines the future readiness of organizations. In a world where digital dependence is growing, it is vital for governments and organizations to invest in an open, standardized, and collaborative cloud infrastructure. Cloud portability is essential for agility in regulatory compliance and can also lead to significant cost savings.
